Crochet popcorn stitch pattern

Have you tried to crochet popcorn stitch? Did you find it confusing? Really - once you know how the stitch goes together, you'll have no problems with it. Yes, really.

There are several ways of working groups of stitches in crochet - some of which are puffs, clusters, popcorns and bullion stitch. They are all worked in slightly different ways.

You can work the popcorns in double crochet or treble crochet. Treble crochet is a longer stitch. It's common to work popcorns in between other stitches which add texture and interest to your project.

Let's say you're working in double crochet...each crochet popcorn stitch is made up of a number of double crochets joined together at the top to form a bump. The more double crochets worked in the crochet popcorn stitch, the larger and more prominent the bump.

Here's how to work a single popcorn in double crochet and chain stitch...

  1. Chain 1, work 3, 4 or 5 double crochets into the next stitch, after the last stitch is worked remove the hook from that last loop (hold onto the loop - make sure it doesn't unravel), and push your hook through the chain you worked right before the popcorn, then pick up the last loop and pull the last loop through the chain.
  2. Chain 1 to finish the popcorn and secure it, then you're done.

That's one crochet popcorn stitch by itself. Remember, the chain immediately before the popcorn is the first part of the stitch.

If you'd like to try the crochet popcorn stitch sample at the top of the page, it is worked in chain, single crochet and double crochet.

Here's how that sample goes...

  1. Chain multiples of 4 - I used 24 chains for a good size sample - then work an extra 5 turning chains.
  2. Work 1 popcorn of 5 double crochets into the 6th chain from hook, which is as follows... work 5 double crochets into the next stitch, after the last stitch is worked remove the hook from that last loop (hold onto the loop - make sure it doesn't unravel), push your hook through the chain you worked right before the popcorn, then pick up the last loop and pull the last loop through the chain, chain 1 to secure popcorn...*chain 1, skip 1 stitch, double crochet into next 2 stitches, chain 1, skip 1 stitch, 1 popcorn into next stitch, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, chain 1, skip 1 stitch, double crochet into last stitch.
  3. Turn, chain 1, single crochet into all 24 stitches. Make sure you work 1 single crochet into each of the stitches worked in the previous row (popcorn counts as 1 stitch), work 2 single crochets into the turning chain at the end of the row. Count carefully.
  4. Turn, chain 5, skip 1 stitch, work 1 popcorn into next stitch, *chain 1, skip 1 stitch, double crochet into next 2 stitches, chain 1, skip 1 stitch, 1 popcorn into next stitch, repeat from * to last 2 stitches, chain 1, skip 1 stitch, double crochet into last stitch.
  5. Rows 3 & 4 form the pattern repeat. Repeat as necessary for your project.

Of course you could continue your crochet popcorn stitch sample and make a scarf or an afghan square instead of pulling it out again. Better still - why not make a scrapbook or file of all these new stitches you're learning?

That's it, make a note of the name of the stitch, the multiples needed for the stitch, how you worked it and the date (you'll easily forget). Also make a note of anything you liked or disliked, rate the stitch for its' level of difficulty and there you have your own records for future projects.

What could be better than your own collection of samples of crochet stitches? You'll have fun building it too.
